Apr 21, 2020

The Neighbourhood Group is delighted to welcome Bill Sinclair, our new President and CEO, on April 23, 2020.

Bill SinclairBill has worked in the non-profit sector for the past 33 years, and has been the Executive Director of St. Stephen’s Community House since 2015. A champion for social justice, Bill has a proven track record of effectively addressing issues of poverty, homelessness, and social inequity for the most vulnerable people in our city. He joins The Neighbourhood Group after the April 1 merger with St. Stephen's Community House.

Bill has driven the development of ground-breaking, innovative service delivery in supportive housing, harm reduction, newcomer partnerships, youth services, and trusteeships of grass roots organizations and networks. St. Stephen’s Youth Drop-in serves as our city’s preferred model with a barrier-free approach that includes youth justice, conflict resolution and an integrated model of health care. Bill led the fight and mobilized community support to open and keep open an overdose prevention site in Kensington Market in response to the rising crisis in our city. As a leader in Decent Work advocacy, Bill has positioned decent work as a vital part of the sector’s anti-poverty efforts. Under Bill’s leadership, St. Stephen’s Community House was recognized as a 2019 Greater Toronto Area Top Employer in the Globe and Mail, and has been named as a top 100 Charity by Maclean’s magazine and Charity Intelligence in 2020.

“Bill’s commitment to community, clients, staff and volunteers has been at the core of his work through the years with St. Stephen’s and I know that he will bring the same passion and dedication to his new role as President and CEO of TNG”, said Cathy Hennessey, Board Chair, St. Stephen’s Community House and new Board Co-Chair, The Neighbourhood Group.

After 38 years dedicated to working in the non-profit sector, The Neighbourhood Group’s current President and CEO, Elizabeth Forestell will be retiring on April 22, 2020.

Elizabeth ForestellBeginning as Executive Director at Central Neighbourhood House in 2008, Elizabeth led the organization through three major merges, and was the driving force behind the 2014 formation of The Neighbourhood Group, most recently joined by St. Stephen’s Community House. With strong roots in community development, capacity building, social justice and a responsive approach to community need, Elizabeth guided the growth of this vital multi-service organization to help those most vulnerable in our neighbourhoods.

“Under her capable and insightful leadership for over 12 years, Elizabeth has significantly grown the organization without compromising its responsiveness to local needs and its commitment to alleviating poverty. She leaves The Neighbourhood Group well-positioned to tackle the significant societal issues and uncertain times ahead", said Samira Viswanathan, Board Co-Chair, The Neighbourhood Group. “Her latest efforts of joining forces with St. Stephen’s Community House will enable us to bring about positive and innovative change and continue building resilient, just and inclusive communities.”

Thank you, Elizabeth, for bringing your passion and wisdom as the leader of The Neighbourhood Group. Your time here is a testament to the thousands of people we help each year. And welcome to Bill – as the incoming CEO, your dedication and vision ensures that The Neighbourhood Group will continue to meet the challenges faced by the vulnerable people and communities that we serve.
