Turning a nightmare into a dream
Crista Fasano always dreamed of starting her own business. But that dream turned into a nightmare when she ran into difficulties and had trouble paying her rent. It didn’t matter that for the last ten years, she always paid her rent on time and helped her neighbours whenever she could – her landlord served her an eviction notice.
Crista was referred to us through the Eviction Prevention in the City program (EPIC). EPIC helps low-income people in Toronto who face imminent eviction. Our team started by working with Crista to establish her goals, connect her with essential resources, like free tax clinics, and successfully supported her at a Landlord and Tenant Board hearing. By stabilizing her finances, Crista was able to stay in her home.
Today, Crista has realized her dream: She’s the proud owner of Cypress Natural Bodycare, maker of organic body care products. “It was such an eventful year. I feel brand new thanks to St. Stephen’s and your strength to get me moving forward.”
