Thinking outside the box
An Arcade participant since she was 12, Yvonne says of St. Stephen's house: "My whole life story began here! When I was 12, I was a really judgemental, rowdy little kid. The staff here challenged me to think outside the box about what I was saying and about my thinking. A few years ago, I was in a really different place and the counsellors helped me and gave me support. They've help with job searches, housing listings, school things, whatever it is in your life. I trust the staff here - I can talk about really deep things. I've done it all here. I'm really grateful to be a part of this place. It's really close to my heart."
Now 21 and still very much part of life at Arcade, Yvonne is particularly proud of her involvement in Arcade's publishing projects. As an integral part of the Young Women's group, Yvonne went from participant to staff and spent a summer working as an editor on the It's Not All Black and White book project. "Through that and my years of involvement with St. Stephen's, I've got to know myself and to explore things I never thought I would be part of. My life is different because of the Youth Arcade. I'm now chasing my passions with confidence - and a lot of that confidence comes from St. Stephen's."
